Life in Switzerland and Europe
The problem with having a blog is that without content, writing an entry is pointless. The alternative is to make low-content posts about things like “What I made for dinner on Thursday” or “It’s fucking raining again.” (Seriously, it rains a lot). Sometimes, you’re waiting for content because none of the batteries you have work in your camera so you need to get pictures from someone else.
The point is, I didn’t die in a bus crash in southern Switzerland.
(The first photo in each section takes you to the photo album with all the photos I took).
Waldshut
Meat is very expensive in Switzerland for various reasons. To avoid this, interns make trips to Germany to buy meat where it can be found much more cheaply. I went for the first time a couple weeks ago with my co-worker, since he needed some stuff and I had never been. I didn’t buy too much because my fridge is about the size of a kitchen cabinet, but I bought some wieners and some pork chops. The latter have been more more delicious than the former so farMany snacks are cheaper in Germany as well, but since I was still feeling out my kitchen size (and they wouldn’t accept my credit card), I couldn’t buy too much. Next time.
It is impossible for me to take a good photo.
Zurich
The next day, I decided to do some sightseeing around Zurich. I just ended up wandering around the downtown area this time, since I’ll be back multiple times. The batteries in my camera died after a few hours, but I still managed to take some decent photos:

Zurich is definitely a beautiful city from what I’ve seen so far and I’m looking forward to exploring it in some more detail in the coming months.
Two final things:
1. I had what the Swiss call “panache” for the first time last week – half a pint glass of beer and the other half is “lemonade” (it’s Sprite). Either way, it is delicious. Maybe a bit too much Sprite, but it’s definitely refreshing and great for drinking in the summer. Just watch how fast you down it.
2. Not having to get up at 5:30AM to watch the World Cup is the greatest thing ever. Sadly, I did not get any footage from the aftermath of Switzerland beating Spain, but people were celebrating like they already won the whole thing. I doubt it’ll be that crazy after beating Honduras, but who knows.
I safely arrived in Baden Tuesday morning, and I’m currently living in the Kantonsspital rooming houses. The upside is that it is only a five-minute walk to work. The downsides, however:
However, I’ve made the best of a bad situation and made the place somewhat livable:

The desk had to be swung around to the window so I could use the free wi-fi until I started sharing with my neighbour. However, I’m still contending with issues like:

Just a hotplate and a bar fridge. Not exactly gourmet. However, the view from my place is really nice:

All in all, I’m settling in kind of okay – I have pots and pans, actual food and I’m over the jet lag. The blog does get more interesting after this, I promise.
